Seniors girls qualify for district tournament in single division

February 26, 2010

Marie Hofer

The knights as a team fell short but seniors Elizabeth Green and Jessica Monet Harvey qualified for the district tournament in the single’s division. The team as a whole bowled 2,859. Green placed second with a series of 532 for three games and a high game of 213. Harvey finished third with a series of 526 for three games and a high game of 187.

“I bowled my best game ever last Sunday. It was so exciting and instead of getting tired and losing my focus in the second match, which normally happens, I bowled a solid 526 for three games,” Harvey said.

Both girls moving on agree that, the competitive level in the singles division will be vastly different than what they are accustomed to.

“The competition at the last level wasn’t too difficult, Jess and i placed in the top 3 individuals. We bowled teams we’ve played against all season. Sunday is going to be a big jump from last weekend though,” Green said. We’re going to need at least a 600, which is three games of at least 200.”

In the face of adversity the two senior bowlers are ready to face the rise in the level of competition head on.

“It’s entirely possible but it won’t be easy. But that is what it will take, there are going to be so many polished, solid bowlers there this weekend,” Green said.

Green and Harvey will be bowling Sunday at 1 p.m. at Hall of Fame Lanes in Canton for a chance to move on to the state finals.

Boys basketball hopes to end the regular season with two straight wins

February 25, 2010

Pete DelMedico

The Knights gave a noble effort in a 55-51 loss to Medina at home on Tuesday night in Barry Gymnasium. Medina Highland is ranked 7th in the Plain Dealer Poll and boasts an impressive 17-2 record. The loss didn’t only add a loss to Hoban’s 10-8 record, but it left them with only two games left to build momentum going into the playoffs.

“I’m proud of the effort,” head coach T.K Griffith said. “We had our chances, it just didn’t finish in our favor.”

Junior Evan Pannell finished with 16 points while junior Lucas Sokol had 11 points and sophomore Greg McMullen grabbed seven rebounds in the loss.

Friday night at home, at 7:30 P.M. the squad hosts league rival Villa Angela-St. Joseph in their last NCL game of the year with the stakes high. Villa Angela-St. Joseph is the season champion in the White side of the NCL and has a few young talents not to be taken lightly. A win Friday night would also make Hoban NCL Blue co-champions. The boys regular season reaches its final game against Firestone on Saturday at 7:30 P.M. at Barry Gymnasium.

“Saturday night is senior night so emotions will be running high,” senior co-captain A.J. Pero said.

“Two wins this weekend would be a great springboard into the playoffs,” Griffith said.

“If we win both of these games we can go into the playoffs on a two-game winning streak and great momentum,” Pero said.

Monday night marks the start of Hoban’s playoff voyage. They battle 2009 district runner-up Marlington at 7:30 P.M. at the Canton Memorial Fieldhouse.

Radio stations need new approach

February 22, 2010

Alexander Salamon

When clicking the radio favourites button, listeners can easily tell that current music is suffering. Modern radio lacks character. It seems as though radio stations play the same 20 songs throughout the day. The same loop, the same routine, every day, over and over again as songs released months ago are still played hourly over the radio waves.

What radio stations do not understand is that old is not necessarily bad. I realize that everyone has individual taste and that is to be expected. Modern music, to me, seems to all be edited and mass produced to sound the same. The same beats, the same voices, the same bland performances. Unless radio stations start playing a wider array of selections with innovative and brisk new music, I see no point in listening anymore.

Although radio stations such as 91.3 The Summit offer a wide selection of different genres throughout the day, a new radio station could engage the area by playing classic songs that are rarely heard by legendary bands whose songs never make it on the air. Pop music is being stereotyped while classic groups such as Rose Hill Drive, We The Kings, The Black Keys and YES are getting thrown under the bus.

New artists are creating stimulating contemporary music. In fact, these songs are catchy enough that radio stations play them over and over again only to lower the true beauty of them. While artists such as Lady Gaga, the Black Eyed Peas and Taylor Swift are over saturating the radio waves, radio stations can improve music quality by introducing varied artists every now and then.

Most Overplayed radio songs:
Down – Jay Sean Featuring Lil Wayne
Poker Face, Just Dance, Bad Romance – Lady GaGa
I Got a Feeling and Boom Boom Pow – Black Eyed Pea
Replay – Iyaz
Waking up in Vegas, Hot N’ Cold – Katy Perry
TiK ToK – Ke$ha
Single Ladies (Put a ring on it) – Beyonce
You belong with Me, Love Story -Taylor Swift
Live your Life – T.I Featuring Rihanna
I’m Yours – Jason Mraz

Canada stunned by U.S. miracle on ice

February 22, 2010

Evan Luse

“Do you believe in miracles? Yes!” The famous words of broadcaster Al Michaels spoken 30 years ago to the day on Monday prevailed as truth once again for the men’s U.S. hockey team as they defeated Canada in a monumental upset 5-3 on Sunday night.

The Canadian squad was predicted to lay waste to an inexperienced and smaller U.S. team, but that was not the case. Keeper Ryan Miller made miraculous save after miraculous save and ended the game with an astounding 42 saves.

“It’s probably one of the biggest games I’ve ever played,” Miller said to ESPN. “When things happened we responded. We didn’t get nervous or anxious. We kept playing.”

Somehow the U.S. team was able to pull out a victory, even though the shot on goal differential was 45-23 in Canada’s favor. Leading the offensive end of the ice was American Brian Rafalski, who scored two goals.

“We know we can beat anybody now,” Rafalski said to ESPN.

Pre-tournament predictions said that Canada and Russia would be the clear cut favorites, but after this historic upset the U.S. is now the number one seed heading into elimination rounds. As for Canada, they must win to stay alive and all roads lead to facing off with powerhouse Russia.

“We’re throwing 45 shots at these goalies and they are making stops facing forward, backward, sideways,” Canadian goalie Martin Brodeur said to ESPN. “Eventually, we’ll be more successful.”

The United States not only achieved a stunning upset and momentum heading into elimination play, but they also earned a valuable period of rest. They will tangle with the winner of the Switzerland-Belarus match-up on Tuesday. The U.S. squad will take the ice again on Wednesday at 3 P.M.

Vancouver weather not up to Olympic standards

Vancouver weather not up to Olympic standards

.

February 22, 2010

Pete DelMedico

At home, spectators may be confused when they turn on the winter Olympics and they see… grass. Or when half of the competitors in a downhill ski race fall before their run is finished. The warm weather and rain are not only defacing the image of the winter Olympics, but putting Olympians lives at risk like never before.

Due to weather, competitors have lost vital practice time on the courses. Athletes fear that insufficient practice runs may result in poor scores or injury from the unfamiliar platforms. Rain and ice don’t mix; and lugers know this well. In fact, over a dozen sliders crashed within a couple of days on the course, one being fatal.

On Friday, 21 year-old luger Nodar Kumaritashvili crashed and died during a practice run. When there is a sudden death the following words are often, “It happened so fast.” Kumaritashvili rounded the corner of Whistlers $100 million course at 89.4mph. After rounding the sharp turn, he was thrown into an unpadded steel girder. Immediate medical support was no use for this freak, deadly crash.

“These accidents should not happen,” Swiss figure skater Sarah Meier said.

Bad journalism was questioned after the video of the tragic crash was shown over 44 times on NBC, the sole network of the Olympics.

That night, at the opening ceremony, the Republic of Georgia’s 11 Olympic members mourned the loss of their teammate by wearing black hats, scarves and armbands.

Some may argue the heightened competition is the reason for all the crashing, but weather statistics don’t lie. In some situations, snow has replenished the hills by way of helicopter dumps. Desperate adjustments like this, on the biggest stage in the world, are not ideal for the athletes or the fans.

Now competitors have one more concern to worry about as they step up to the starting line- their lives.

Monopoly Revolution changes classic formula

Monopoly Revolution changes classic formula

.

February 22, 2010

Nick Pelini

It is round, has an ATM banking system, plays music clips and has plain translucent tokens. It’s Monopoly?

Hasbro unveiled a 75th anniversary edition of the classic, revolutionary board game known as Monopoly Revolution. The revolution proves true with numerous changes that will either invite new customers in or turn away classic players.

One new feature is the addition of an ATM banking system. Throwing out the old way of adding countless bills, new Monopoly “credit cards” will keep track of each player’s finances. Though it gets rid of the classic playing style that includes a banker, the flashy swipe cards could eliminate cheating by removing theft when the banker is not looking.

Another new characteristic of the updated classic is the new pieces used to navigate the board. The old tokens such as the familiar hat or ship are now plain images on clear, plastic pieces.

The final change could become the most hated of all modifications: the familiar square board has made the switch to a circular shape. The square property spaces are now sleek wedges and the ATM resides in the middle of the board. Along with the new shape come new prices. Every monetary aspect of the game is now multiplied by 10,000. For example, passing Go yields $2 million rather than the old measly $200.

Monopoly Revolution is expected to be released this fall 2010 and retail for approximately $34.99.

Banglabash is Banglaback

.

February 19, 2010

Nick Pelini and Johanna Breiding

Banglabanners are all over the school, making raising money banglacool. It’s the time of year to help out Holy Cross schools in Bangladesh. This year, Biroidakuni High School is in need of major banglabucks to afford a new computer lab to go along with their recently acquired electricity.

Hoban is ready to answer the call and hopes to raise $15,000 to fund the new computers. In order to raise this money, various incentives are being teased to students to raise donations.

For $25, students will receive a Banglabash t-shirt that can be worn to school every Friday through April 30. Also, students will obtain a ticket to the faculty-student banglabasketball game on March 3.

For $50, students will not only receive the Banglabash t-shirt and admission to the game, but boys as well as girls will be allowed to grow as much facial hair (including a banglabeard) as desired to school every day. Students will also be allowed to wear Hoban sweatpants with their Banglabash t-shirts every Friday until April 30.

For $75, students will receive all of the incentives above and will also be allowed to wear shorts that pass the pop can test and flip flops or sandals every day until April 30.

“I can’t imagine going to school without electricity,” said senior activities committee member Hannah Karg. “It is our responsibility to help out our fellow Holy Cross School and at least give them a chance at the opportunities we have.”

Banglabash kicked off on Tuesday, Feb. 16 and runs through Wednesday, March 3.

NBA trade rumors useless, Cavs and Lakers remain untouchables

.

February 18, 2010

Evan Luse

Trade rumors and whispers have intensified as the trade deadline approaches this Thursday, Feb. 18th. Much of the trade talk has involved the Phoenix Suns forward Amare Stoudemire and possible deals with either the Cleveland Cavalieers or the Miami Heat. Other big name players involved in trade talks include Miami’s Jermaine O’Neal and Michael Beasley, Washington Wizzard Antawn Jamison, Philidelphia 76er Andre Iguodala and Golden State Warrior Corey Maggette.

The Portland Trail Blazers recently acquired the Clippers’ Marcus Camby, the answer for replacing both Greg Oden and Joel Przybilla that were lost to season-ending injuries.

In return, Los Angeles received point guard Steve Blake and small forward Travis Outlaw.

“I think it’s a great situation for myself. It’s a first-class organization that really takes care of their own,” Camby said in an interview with ESPN. “I hope I can bring my knowledge of the game, and blend in these last 27 games and I’m really excited to be here.”

Most experts speculated that Amare Stoudemire would find a new home in Cleveland, but that was not the case. The Cavs aquired all-star forward Antwan Jamison and point gaurd Sebastian Telfair from the Wizards in a deal for Zydrunas Ilgauskas and a 2010 first-round draft choice.

“Antawn is a great pro. We are very excited to have an experienced all-star player of Antawn’s caliber and character join us,” Cavaliers general manager Danny Ferry said in a statement to the press after the trade was announced.

This trade has strenghted the Cavs interior presence, and Cleveland hopes that this new deal with help them battle with other top teams in the post season.

Regardless of all the trades that take place the fact remains that the Cavs and the Lakers will remain the clear cut favorites to match up in the finals this summer. The Cavs have accumulated a 43-11 record and have ripped off a 13 game winning streak that they look to add to after the All-Star break. Simmilarly, the Lakers have mustered a 42-13 record even with injuries to both Kobe Bryant and Andrew Bynum.

Girls spoil senior night for Padua, remain undefeated in NCL

.

February 18, 2010

Evan Luse

Senior night is typically a night one remembers: parents are hugged, recognition is received in front of faithful fans and a win is usually the outcome. Last Saturday night the girls basketball team spoiled the night for Padua’s seniors as they defeated the Bruins for the second time this season.

Padua came out looking inspired early on and used a 2-3 zone that relatively frustrated the Knights for the first quarter. In the second half, the girls made a push to extend a lead. Krissy Sokol led the first half charge and the Knights built a 13-33 halftime lead. Sokol finished the game with 20 points.

The Bruins could never catch up as they were frustrated by a full-court press that generated many easy transition buckets. Solid defense and a balanced scoring effort led to a 55-35 victory for the Knights.

“It’s always tough to win on the other team’s senior night,” Head coach Tracy Miller said. “The other team always comes out pumped up.”

Despite the obstacles of playing on the road the squad improved its record to 12-4 overall and 10-0 in the NCL. Senior guard Taneka Lewis, who finished the game with 12 points, hopes to remain undefeated in the league.

“To stay undefeated we have to hold each other accountable,” Lewis said. “We set goals earlier in the season and they need to be met.”
Miller likewise hopes to remain undefeated in the league.

“Our goal was and is to be undefeated in the league,” Miller said. “To do that, we have to come to play each night like it could be our last.”

If the girls remain undefeated they will capture their fifth consecutive NCL Blue Division title.

The squad squared off with Elyria Catholic yesterday but results were not available at press time. Fans can watch the girls try to take care of business with Lake Catholic this Saturday at 7:30 P.M. at Lake Catholic.

NBA superstars Lebron and Kobe battle for league MVP title

NBA superstars Lebron and Kobe battle for league MVP title

.

February 18, 2010

Evan Shaub and Ryland Parnell

Sports writers present arguments to help answer the question: Who’s the MVP?

Lebron James is the greatest basketball player alive.
Yeah, you read that right. There is no doubt that Lebron James is better than Kobe Bryant. Kobe fans can argue that he has four rings, Kobe fans can argue that he has an MVP (but so does Lebron), and that’s it. In general, Lebron James, at the fresh age of 25, is already racking up a better resume than his west-coast counterpart.

If you’ve ever had the honor of seeing Lebron play, you’ve got to be thinking the same thing. Lebron makes the extra pass, Kobe doesn’t pass. Lebron has taken a team of bench players to the NBA finals, Kobe hasn’t.

With Kobe, it’s incredible that a guy who is so selfish with the ball could be so dependent on his teammates for wins. Take this as an example, from the 04-05 season to the 06-07 season, the time when the Lakers were rebuilding and the only seasons where Kobe hasn’t had a teammate in the All-Star game, the Lakers went a combined 121-125. Lebron, by comparison has only had one All-Star teammate in his entire career, and he still has a better record than Kobe over the last five years.

That’s not the only record Lebron has that Kobe doesn’t. Recently, Lebron set a record for most consecutive conference player of the month titles, with five.

Whether you like it or not, Lebron James is better than Kobe Bryant, and by the end of his career he will be the best ever. (Shaub)

Kobe Bryant was selected 13th pick overall in the 1996 NBA draft by the Charlotte Hornets straight out of Philadelphia from Lower Merion High School. Bryant has won four NBA Championships – three of them with the big man Shaquille O’Neil. Cleveland Caviler Lebron James still does not have a championship ring, but is often compared to being as great as or even better than Bryant.

James is one of the greatest in Cavalier history, but he is no Kobe Bryant. In the 2007-08 season, Bryant was voted Most Valuable Player of the NBA. Bryant, who averages 28.3 points per game in the 2009-2010 season, is considered one of the best athletes in the NBA and is compared to the great Chicago Bull Michael Jordan. Bryant scored 81 points during one game, making him the second top single game scorer.
Bryant can easily match up with any team’s star player. James was even quoted in an interview saying that Bryant is one of the best of all time.

When the game is on the line and the Lakers need someone to rise to the occasion and take over the game, the person is the one and only Kobe Bryant. (Parnell)
