Glenmary participants were told when they arrived that they would gain more than they gave. They discovered the veracity of this statement.
Glenmary farm is a ministry in Lewis County, Kentucky that was established by Glenmary Home missioners in an attempt to establish the Catholic Church in that part of the country. While Lewis County is not the only place Glenmary is present, the farm in Kentucky is the most well known, especially to Hoban students.
Even though these students were stripped of what people today might consider their inalienable rights (texting, showering, game consoles, T.V., makeup etc.) most are in agreement that the people they encountered on the trip who lacked these amenities were more blessed than anyone they have met.
“The people of Lewis County, Kentucky have so little but are the happiest people I’ve seen. They treasure everything they have. I hope our community can value family and friends more rather than our possessions,” junior Sammi Heil said.
One Lewis County resident, Edith Smith, (Wild Woman), who shared her time and stories with those who attended, stands out the most.
“When we went to go see wild women she said that she was really rich. Even though she was very poor she felt she was rich in spirit and happiness because of all her visitors. junior Taylor Blakenship said.
This one-week retreat brought peace of mind while the participants lived in solidarity with the people of the area. Drinking powdered milk might not be on anyone’s top ten list of things to do, but under the circumstances it was seen as a humbling experience and taught to be thankful for what might not always be there.
“Glenmary showed us wealth is not monetary but stems from enjoying the little things in life” said senior Blake Gross, a second time missioner to Glenmary.
Many are finding through service hours that maybe the people they are helping aren’t the ones who are missing out.

Why wasn’t this run in the actual visor. It seems a lot more relevant than a “hot or not” list.
