Knights end an unforgettable season

One of the unfortunate truths in high school sports is that there is a winner and a loser at the end of each game. This is especially sad when two state-ranked teams meet, leaving one team’s season to end prematurely. A prime example of this was last Thursday when the strong Hoban volleyball team lost to defending district champion Northwest on the final point of the fifth game.

“We gave it our all and we have nothing to be ashamed of,” said senior captain Krissy Sokol. “We had a successful season and have grown so much this year. The game just did not turn out the way we wanted.”

The Knights came into the game with a record of 16-5. They were pumped, excited and ready to play in front of a large Hoban turnout. This momentum led the Knights to win their first match 25-19.

“We came ready to win and we wanted it so bad,” senior captain Amy Yakubowski said. “We were so excited because we knew this is what we have been preparing for all season. We came out strong, and controlled the first match.”

The Knights tried to carry this energy over to the second game but came up short when Northwest split the first two matches winning 25-20. The Knights refocused their energy and came back to break the tie and win the third game 25-22. The Indians were not going to give up that easily and tied the game up with a win in the fourth match, 25-19.

“It kept going back and forth between us and the Indians through the game,” senior hitter Kelsey Shultz said. “We played well, but unfortunately they capitalized on some of our mistakes during the fourth match and got the win.”

The season all came down to the final game. Hoban’s offense, led by Sokol who had 18 kills and 12 blocks, played well while the defense, anchored by Yakubowski, made key digs to keep the team alive. The teams battled to a 14-14 gridlock- a two point lead would finish the match for either team. Indians senior Dakota Harkins stepped up in the closing moments with crucial blocks and spikes which helped Northwest take the victory, 17-15.

“We have come a long way in the last two seasons,” Hoban head coach Trish Johnson said. “Last year we were under .500, we totally turned things around this season with a 16-6 record, making it to the distinct final and a five-game match. So, we can’t be disappointed with how we have done this year.”
