This holiday season, the art club is bringing its talents out of the classroom and into the Akron community as it paints its banner for the annual Lock 3 Holidayfest and Chriskindl Market.

“I have done a lot of art projects for Akron, and doing the banner is a good way to be connected to the city,” art club president and senior Tyler Cothren said.

For the third year, Hoban is making its contribution to the collection of holiday banners with a unique design idea.

“I was trying to get kids to do something different,” art teacher and club moderator Jill Fortman said. “We were joking about doing a hippie Santa in a Volkswagen and tires instead of reindeer. The tires are a personal twist and an Akron connection in tribute to the city.”

Since the end of October, 20 diligent artists, working after school and on Saturdays, have been creating their masterpiece. To allow it to withstand the weather, the paint was exterior latex paint typically used on houses. However, for Fortman, the experience is about more than art.

“I like working outside the classroom with the kids,” Fortman said. “We joke and laugh. Painting is fun, but it’s about the relationships.”

The final product will be completed on Dec. 9, and the unveiling of the banners will take place at Lock 3 on Sunday, Dec. 13 at 4:00 PM. All are invited to attend and if students mention Hoban, they can skate for a discounted $1 price.
