President Obama to send more troops to Afghanistan

December 8, 2009

President Obama gave a speech on Tuesday, Dec. 2, explaining his plans for U.S. troops in Afghanistan. He announced at West Point Military

Academy that he is to call for 30,000 more troops to be deployed at the beginning of 2010.

The President stressed that the ultimate goal was for Afghanistan to be responsible for their own country.

“We have no interest in occupying your country,” said President Obama in an address to Afghanistan.

However, many Americans fear that this military action will take all of President Obama’s attention to Afghanistan and away from home.

Historians say that wartime presidents have to learn to command and console, this has been a challenge for war presidents since Abraham Lincoln. During war, the President’s job can be seen as a balancing act between political calculations and national empathy without looking weak.

Along with the influx of soldiers to Afghanistan, the President also announced that he has plans to begin an evacuation of U.S . troops in July of 2011. However, some say the mention of this future plan was only an attempt to appease his liberal followers.

The war on terrorism could surpass $1 trillion by the end of next year, causing controversy while the nation is coming out of a recession.

The ‘Griever in Chief’ now consoles America, trying to get the message across that he understands the sacrifice, as he sends off 30,000 troops and prepares to fight a more emotional fight on the home front.

Weren’t we supposed to take out troops a long time ago? I mean did we ever have any business there anyway? nope. How would we like it if some country thought we were having problems and just decided to come over and invade us and just start a war? I don’t think any of us would welcome it.

Frosh…think rationally. Pulling out of Afghanistan, as was done in Vietnam, adds to the reputation of the US military as weak, which is not a reputation our country wants. Leaving Afghanistan with unfinished business is not a wise move. Saying that you would be unhappy if your country was invaded by another is not a strong enough reason to pull out of a war.
