Akron’s Musica is platform for rising stars

Musica is not only the Italian and Spanish translation of “Music,” but the name of Akron’s hidden music venue located on East Market St. in the heart of downtown Akron. Musica, tucked in a unique alleyway between Crave and Big City Chop House (along with Rubber City Clothing and Mocha Maiden), is often overlooked by passing cars. The live music venue holds just over 300 people and is conveniently connected to the Mocha Maiden coffee shop.

Musica is both a pit stop for great underground bands as well as a platform for the local, up-and-coming ones. On Sat. Jan 30, they featured The Antlers with opening performances by local bands Wild Boy of Aveyron and Annabel. Tickets for this performance cost a mere $10. Most ticket prices range from $5-$15 on all days of the week.

“It’s been amazing getting the chance to watch Musica grow from a small startup to a cultural icon in Akron. It opened shortly before I got signed, and the owners, promoter, and staff are all great friends of mine,” said local musician Pete Nischt. “They’re people not only concerned with providing a breeding ground for art and talent but also in giving the city something to be proud of.”

Though Musica cannot compete with local venues like Blossom and The House of Blues, it provides Akronites with their cheap music fix.

“It’s so simple to walk up to the door pay ten bucks and listen to a few hours of great music,” junior Anthony Arnone said.

The homey ambiance and laid back locals are the special ingredients that transcend the larger, better known venues.

“I’ve played hundreds of venues across the country and Musica is among the classiest,” Nischt said.

“Even if you don’t know the band it’s a cool place to discover a new favorite,” Arnone said.
