Say goodbye to the strawberry harvest this year because the United States has been plagued with a bone chilling winter. The country experienced record low temperatures within the past week as the Fahrenheit measurements plummeted into the teens and 20’s around the nation. The mid-west has been decimated with temperatures as low as -27, not including the wind chill factor.
Heating bills are skyrocketing, transportation becomes frustrating as road conditions worsen and any idea of a bright new day is dismal. Despite these drab conditions, there are, in fact, some positives to the freezing cold.
For one, it allows for a better appreciation of bright, sun-drenched summer days. Those living in tropical climates, such as Florida, take the sunny weather for granted while Ohioans have the privilege of experiencing every aspect of all the seasons.
The bitter cold also allows people to come closer together. As families find relief in their homes from the outside cold, spending the night as a family, bundled up in blankets near a fire watching a favorite movie or playing a game, is always comforting.
A convenient truth is that polar bears no longer have to swim for survival, lawns do not need to be mowed and the four months of snow allow for intense snowball fights, gung ho snowmen building, passionate ice-skating and a thrilling snowboard and ski season.
So before condemning the winter frost, realize that all things come to an end and enjoy the present while it lasts.
