February snow sets a new record

March 12, 2010

Fresh fallen snow is sparkling and exciting, especially when it is the first snow of the season. Snow ball fights and snowmen take over the neighborhood and kids can’t wait to have fun. Snow is exciting for the first few months of winter, but when it’s February and snow is still falling it is no longer exciting.

21.5 inches of snow has fallen as of Monday, Feb. 15, the third highest amount of snow the Akron area has had in February. 2008 holds the record at 25.8 inches of snow. The average snow for February is 5.2 inches.

And it’s not just the accumulation that is different; it has been 8 degrees colder. The chills experienced are not because of imagination. Akron has already received 45.5 inches of snow this winter, 17.6 inches above the average and winter isn’t over yet.

“I hate snow!” senior Marie Kunze said.

Saturday, Feb. 6 ended up being a morning people regretted getting out of bed. The amount of snow Akron received was not what people had prepared for.

“I couldn’t believe the amount of snow we got,” Julie Kohut said. “There was no way I was going to shovel my driveway. My neighbor has a snow blower so he was nice enough to clear our driveway once he was done with his.”

People spent time shoveling their driveways with the hopes of having the chance to break out of their house but their hopes were destroyed when they realized they couldn’t get out of their street.

“My driveway is horrible especially in the snow,” senior Ali Beery said. “You are not a good driver until you can conquer my driveway in snow.”

Due to the fact the snow is unpredictable driving has become treacherous. Friday night, a local band, Skag was traveling to Cleveland. It took them three hours instead of 45 minutes, and one hour was spent shoveling the street at 2 a.m.

Friday, Feb. 26 was another day of snow. It proved to be beneficial to students since most schools in the area were closed. February came to an end with 31.7 inches of snow, the snowiest month in 100 years.

“Whenever we get a lot of snow we just pull out the tractor with the snow plow,” Beery said.

February has come to an end with the hopes that spring is soon to come.

“I have almost gotten in to accidents many times due to the Ohio weather,” Kunze said. “I just can’t wait to see green grass again.”
