Scott Kopp, Director of Campus Ministry, is now a published author. Kopp’s book, entitled Postmodernism and Youth Ministry, explores just what the title implies: a look at postmodernism and its effect in youth ministry. The book, published by Wipf and Stock Publishing, is the first book of its kind, with no other books on the shelves on postmodernism from a Catholic perspective. The book, Kopp explains, is an extension of his graduate paper.
“I feel that writing the book fits perfectly with my ministry because it answered a need, ”Kopp said. “It wasn’t about making money.”
The ideals of postmodernism are that, simply put, there should be no explanations toward the understanding of life – and that can be valid for all groups, cultures, traditions or races. Postmodernism relies, knowing always that the outcome of one’s own experience will be relative, rather than certain and universal. Kopp’s book explains that through these ideas modern youth ministry is affected by everything surrounding the modern age and it gives youth ministers of today, a look at how to work with the cultural effects of youth ministry.
While Kopp does not recommend his book to all Hoban students, he feels that those who are interested in going into ministry in the future would benefit from reading it.
“It is really geared towards anyone working with young adults today,” Kopp said.
Kopp’s motivation to write this book was simply ‘to fill a need’ as he put, since though impressive, having his book published won’t bring him much materialistically, but will help others to better understand modern youth ministry.
