They’re dedicated. They’re ambitious. They’re experienced. They’re leading “the way” to a successful 2010-2011.
Juniors Jenna Decker and Evan Luse have been elected Student Council President and Vice President for next year. Their ticket, which ran on the theme of “pointing the way,” won by 64% in elections last week.
“At Hoban, everyone has a different story to tell and has followed a different path,” Luse said. “But its amazing how all the traditions become our own each year, how we put our own stamp on the Way.”
Their mission started over a year ago, when Luse approached Decker with the idea of running for the executive Student Council positions. These leaders are responsible for overseeing the 31 members of Student Council and organizing all sponsored events including Spirit Week, the canned food drive, the Christmas Adopt-a-Family Project, the talent show, Banglabash, dances and more.
“We are ready to put all of the skills and experiencethat we have gained into action,” Decker said.
Decker and Luse, who happen to be the two Dowed Award winners for the Class of 2011, are both are extremely involved Hoban Knights.
Decker has three years of experience on Student Council including class representation and Activities Committee. Her other co-curriculars include varsity soccer, mock trial, National Honors Society and more. She credits her mom, LuAnne Decker, for pushing her to be where she is today.
“I love my mom,” Decker said. “She has always pushed me to take advantage of every opportunity that I have been given.”
Luse is one of Hoban’s few remaining three sport athletes (football, basketball and track). His leadership experience includes representing Hoban in Junior Leadership Akron and working on Spirit Committee.
“Because Evan has worked on Spirit Committee doing pep rallies and such, and Jenna has worked on dances and fundraisers through Activities Committee, I think they are a well prepared team,” current Student Council secretary and senior Makenzie Bell said.
Other students who supported Decker and Luse credit the pair’s attitudes.
“They complement each other,” said junior Riley Kramer. “Jenna’s work ethic and intensity couples with Evan’s laid back yet focused mentality and it makes them a well rounded pair. “
Decker and Luse, along with their chosen secretary junior Jessica Wapole, have high hopes for what they will achieve next year. They excited many students with the idea of more intramural sports.
“Intramural sports let you test your skills and get to know more people at Hoban,” said freshman Justin Spear. “Personally I’m hoping for intramural fishing and hunting.”
Now that they have been elected, Decker and Luse hope to point the way to a successful year by giving students the chance to make it great.
“In our position, we can give people the opportunity,” Luse said. “It’s up to the students to really take the action and get involved. We just open the door.”
