The students are the big winners in the annual student raffle drive that brings tens of thousands of dollars into the school every year.

The 21st annual fundraiser began Friday, Aug.27. With a top prize of $7500, the drive ends on Wednesday, Sep. 29 and the winner will be announced on Friday, Oct.1 at halftime of the Hoban-St. Peter Chanel  football game.

This fundraising effort not only benefits the winner but also directly affects each student.

“The purpose is to keep tuition down,” Director of Stewardship and Special Events Marilyn Stripe said. “Without it, the cost would be added to each student’s tuition.”

Last year’s drive raised a total of $89,337.80 after expenses. The administration is hoping for a profit of $100,000 this year.

The 2009 drive was also successful for then-sophomore Colton Foster whose sale of 159 tickets earned him the spot as the two-time top seller. He won $300 for his efforts.

“I wanted to become the top seller partly to help give back to the school and partly to win the money,” Foster said.

Marina Coletta was the second place seller, Eric Ingram, third and Sean Cody, fourth. They won $200, $175 and $125, respectively.

This year, the top three sellers will receive the same cash prizes as in the past, but no fourth place award will be given.

Despite the awards and tuition reductions, some students still believe the fall fundraiser has not reached its full potential.

“It’s a great way to raise money for the school, but it fails in its goal to integrate students into the community,” junior Ana Horattas said. “Because they feel pressure to sell the tickets, they just sell them to their parents.”

Others, however, believe the benefits outweigh the disadvantages.
“It is a good fundraiser because it keeps tuition low,” senior Kevin McMahon said. “People who have money can buy the tickets themselves, and those who don’t can sell them.”
