The Knights volleyball team played league rival Padua last Tuesday in Barry Gym, taking the defending state champions to the final point of the fifth game losing the match 13-15.

“We could have easily came into the game with a mental attitude that we can not compete with them, but we did not. We came in with the mind set that we can beat them if we give it our all,” senior captain Krissy Sokol said.

The Knights led the game by winning the first two matches with close scores of 22-25 and 23-25. Seniors Krissy Sokol and Kelsey Shultz led the offense while senior Amy Yakubowski led the defensive unit.

“It was really exciting to come out right away and beat them (Padua) in the first two matches. This proved we could do it,” senior captain Amy Yakubowski said.

The game changed though when the Bruins took over to win a close third match. During the match, senior Amy Yakubowski went down hard with a foot injury and was unable to play the rest of the third match. She came back for the final two matches to help the team out as best she could.

“It affected us not having her (Yakubowski) on the court because she does so much,” Sokol said. “I think not having her presence on the court hurt us cause she is such a key player.”

The Knights, ranked 18th in the state poll, held the Bruins, currently ranked first in the state, to a tight fourth and fifth game. Padua took the win in both games giving them the victory.

“I am disappointed in the loss but I am pleased with how well we played,” Sokol said.

The Knights, 13-5, will play St. Vincent-St. Mary tonight in the last home game of the year.

I feel ashamed for never having seen a girl’s volleyball game at Hoban, but through the great articles written about them, I feel as if I HAVE seen them play. I am glad to have a team at Hoban that seems to have so much heart and passion for the game. I am very proud of the volleyball team and their strength and discipline on the court.
