Caraboolad Fitness Center not fully equipped

The Clem Caraboolad Fitness Center is lacking fitness. More commonly known as the “weight room,” the 3,800 square foot Caraboolad Fitness Center is used by Hoban teams, individual student-athletes and physical education classes.

While the room caters to those who are interested in weight lifting and resistance training, anyone who is even remotely aware of the concept of being fit can easily see that the Caraboolad Fitness Center is missing an aspect of fitness which is just as important as weight lifting: cardiovascular endurance.

Of the 21 exercise machines, there is not a single cardiovascular apparatus available.

While it is true that Hoban’s sports teams have no difficulty in keeping athletes in good cardiovascular shape without the use of treadmills or elliptical machines, there are still many reasons why cardiovascular machines would benefit the Fitness Center.

Most off-season athletes use the weight room to assist them in maintaining muscular strength. If the fitness center was more than just a weight room, athletes could more easily maintain both muscular and cardiovascular shape.

Many students, both on sports teams and not, often pay for memberships to fitness centers such as the YMCA, Lifestyles or Fitness 19. Although Hoban’s fitness center is equipped with the same types of weight lifting machines as these establishments, its lack of cardiovascular exercise machines forces students who choose to work out to do at least half of their workout somewhere else. Treadmills and elliptical machines would give students the opportunity to do so without having to pay for a gym membership. It would also make the Center more accessible to students who are not involved in a Hoban sport.

It is time for Hoban to invest in cardiovascular exercise machines such as treadmills and ellipticals for the Clem Caraboolad Fitness Center. Although space may be an issue, it is a challenge worth tackling in order to provide students, athletes and alumni with the opportunity for cardiovascular exercise.

Here’s your cardiovascular machine: go outside and run around the campus, and don’t dare complain about the weather because I’m sure I’ve run in worse.

Tyler sorry everyone isn’t as fit as you and runs every day in a foot of snow or a hail storm. For those of us who want to keep up their physical fitness when there is a foot of snow on the ground and don’t belong to a gym, Hoban would be the perfect place to workout after school.

This is definately a really good idea. I have always wondered why Hoban had only weight machines and I always wanted the school to invest in this. I know that myself and many of my friends would make good use of the cardio machines. Not only would they help our athletes train, but they would provide a means of personal fitness for everyone at Hoban. I hope to see this proposition put into action, and thanks to the author of this article!

    Dear Tyler Cothren,
Most people will not exercise in extreme weather, but would exercise if equpiment indoors was available. We should support staying in shape for those people who are not as brave as you in extreme weather.
