Sitting with a 5-3 record, the boy’s basketball squad is buckling in for the long haul of the season. A colossal overtime win against former Division III state champion, Cleveland Central Catholic gave the boys the charge they needed after the 74-71 loss to St. Vincent- St. Mary. Following the Cleveland Central Catholic win, the Knights suffered a loss to a talented Kenmore team at the City Classic held at the former Central-Hower High School. The road trip continued with a 78-63 win over NCL opponent Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin. At the Greynolds Classic a few days later, the boys faced the Revere Minutemen, one of the top teams in the area. In their second overtime contest of the season, clutch free throw shooting carried the Knights to a 78-74 victory.
The next week the boys lost in a 53-50 heart breaker to St. Peter Chanel in Bedford on a Tuesday night. Sloppy play and poor shooting were the key contributors to this loss. This past Friday’s game against Holy Name was moved to Saturday to avoid a winter storm, however the boys seemed to have brought the storm to Barry gymnasium and Holy Name never recovered. The Knights won 56-45 with a solid balance from seven different players. Co-Captain AJ Pero had 10 points and Co-Captain Adam Zsely led the Hoban scoring with 15. Junior Lucas Sokol contributed seven points and juniors Evan Pannel and Nate Greczanik also chipped in. Sophomores Mike Reaves and Greg McMullen both had nine points. The win left Hoban 4-1 in the NCL.
“We have been getting great play from our experienced players and consistent skill from juniors like Evan Pannel and Lucas Sokol,” Pero said.
The brutal schedule is only getting more difficult as the season wears.
“We are looking forward to playing Walsh at Walsh in a couple weeks,” said Pero, “ We are set on nothing less than an NCL title.”
But before the Walsh game, the squad travels to Mentor on Friday for a true test of their metal against NCL stronghold Lake Catholic. This game will be one more step on the ladder to an NCL Championship.
