Since the Piston-Pacers brawl in 2004, NBA players have their fighting from fists to firearms. On Dec. 21, the Washington Wizards Gilbert Arenas and teammate Javaris Crittenton pulled guns on each other in the locker room of Verizon Center after a practice. League officials announced the confrontation began as an argument over gambling debts and quickly elevated into a handgun duel.

Arenas brought not one, but four guns into the locker room among his fellow teammates at Verizon Center. Originally, Arenas claimed he brought the guns because he wanted to get them out of the house after his daughter was born. He later stated that he was only playing a joke; nevertheless, he admitted his conduct was unacceptable.

In September, Cleveland Cavaliers guard Delonte West was pulled over on his motorcycle carrying three loaded guns in a violin case. However, this is only one of many incidents where NBA players have colorfully broken the law.

“Just because they are gifted enough to make millions of dollars and play in the NBA does not mean they can live above the law,” Hoban sophomore basketball player Mike Reaves said.

On Jan. 6, NBA commissioner David Stern suspended Arenas indefinitely. The Wizards best player will lose about $147,200 for each game he misses, though this is only a small handful of his six-year, $111 million contract.

As for Crittenton, his lawyer is on vacation so his legal standpoint is currently in limbo.

Losing Arenas, the Wizards MVP, certainly will not help the struggling 11-22 ball club who is dragging their feet as the sixth worst team in the league.
