While only three of the team’s first 10 games have been played in Barry gymnasium, the basketball squad has battled its way to a solid a 6-3 record with Walsh looming tomorrow night. The trend of away games will soon flip to a pleasant streak of battles at the castle next week with Trinity and NDCL on tap.
A home crowd may have been all the boys needed to win their two road losses against Kenmore and St. Peter Chanel. Both games saw cold shooting and sketchy moments from the Knight’s offense.
The grueling schedule is only half over, but so far they have lived up to their expectations of winning the majority of their games.
“Our schedule is very tough this year and it’s taken 100% out of all of us to win our games,” junior guard Evan Pannell said. “There is no team we can take lightly.”
The schedule is arguably one of the toughest in years, especially with only nine home contests. The Knights have tangled with state ranked St. Vincent-St. Mary, Division III state champions Cleveland Central Catholic, Suburban league favorite Revere and NCL powerhouses St. Peter Chanel and Holy Name.
“We have 11 games left in the regular season and I see no reason why we can’t win out and build off that momentum to make a deep run in the playoffs,” senior co-captain Adam Zsely.
To win out in their jungle of a schedule, a number of improvements will be neccessary.
“We need to work on team chemistry and build upon our understanding of our plays,” senior co-captain AJ Pero said.
“We must take care of the ball a lot better,” said Zsely. “Also our defense needs some improvement. We can score with any team but we need to be able to shut teams down when it counts.”
Though the team’s plan is to take it one game at a time, they are looking forward to a successful playoff run that last season lacked.
“We definitely need to put together a streak of wins going into the playoffs. With some wins under our belt and our team skill it will be very hard to stop us,” Pannell said.
On Friday, the homesick Knights will have their annual Walsh showdown at 7:30 P.M. at Walsh Jesuit High School.
