Swift, strong, and quick are three athletic abilities that have helped senior Lawrence Wynn have a success full high school career in football and running. These abilities though have also helped him dominate a new sport; high jumping. Having only started high jumping last track season, Wynn has become not only a prominent runner but also high jumper on the boys track and field team.
Head coach Dave Arbogast wanted to try Wynn in the field event because of his raw natural talent.
“I wanted him to try high jumping because of his quick acceleration, strength and all around athletic ability.” Arbogast said. “I knew with his hard work ethic and athletic build he would be good at it.”
Arbogast could not have been more right because last season Wynn broke a meet record at Marymount Invitational while setting a personal best at 6’3’’. In addition Wynn qualified for the OHSSA district track and field meet and missed advancing to the OHSSA regional track and field meet by one place.
“Having seen what I accomplished last season my goals this year are to break the school record and advance to states,” Wynn said. u
Track and field is most widely known for track while the “and field” element is commonly forgotten.
Senior Meghan Bartlebaugh is the girls “and field” superstar who tied the school record for the high jump last year with a height of 5’3’’. However, it has not been all fun and games for Bartlebaugh. The impressive high jumper’s career almost ended after suffering a stress fracture in her back at the end of sophomore year. She was braced for nine months for the entire off season which allowed for no off-season training. Now, after months of physical therapy, her game has been revived and she is looking to break the school record she set last year.
Supporting Bartlebaugh’s jumping career is fellow high jumper Emma Bishop. These two jumpers share everything together.
“Without Emma, I don’t know what I’d do. We get along so well and we help each other through our hardships and trying times. My bond with Emma is a like peanut butter and jelly sandwich smashed between two pieces of whole grain love.”
As occasional visits to the physical therapist keep her competing, Bartlebaugh is just one of the many inspiring field athletes to watch this season
