It is Sweethearts, Not Spring Fling

As the excitement builds and hearts begin to flutter, sweethearts is on fast approach. Usually planned for late February, this year’s sweethearts dance will take place in the early weeks of March – Mar. 13, 2010 to be exact. Unlike homecoming, where a guy asks a girl, sweethearts is a Sadie Hawkins dance. The girls ask the guys.

The Sadie Hawkins dance-style was named after the comic strip Lil’ Abner in which Sadie Hawkins Day was a day where unmarried women chased the bachelors and married the ones they caught. This idea of women inviting the men of their choosing, instead of waiting for men to ask them, became a popular trend.

For guys, this is a nice change of style. This tradition is a lot less stressful (for us guys). Pressure is put on men to always be the first; the first to ask, the first to bring up conversation and the first to make a move. Now, guys have the chance to sit back and let the girls experience the anxiety and nervousness that race through guys when they ask a girl.

While the emphasis put on Sweethearts is not as immense as Homecoming, the night still provides for a fun time and great memories. Dressing for the night is similar to Homecoming as students wear dresses and suits.

As far as timeliness, students can arrive on time or fashionably late to make an entrance. So on the night of sweethearts, be safe, enjoy yourselves and have a thrilling time.
